Planting 25,000 trees in India
- Organization: Arbor Day Foundation
- Category: Environment
- Location: India, Cauvery River
- Duration: 30 days
The Cauvery River, a lifeline for 84 million people in southern India, is facing a crisis. Over the past seven decades, the river has dwindled by a staggering 40%, leaving communities grappling with severe water scarcity and diminishing agricultural yields.
Farmers reliant on the river for irrigation struggle to make ends meet while drinking water supplies dwindle to critical levels. The once-thriving ecosystem along the Cauvery is now a shadow of its former self, with habitats degraded and wildlife populations dwindling. Urgent action is needed to restore the health and vitality of this vital waterway before it's too late.
Solution
This initiative seeks to reforest the river basin, breathing new life into the landscape and revitalizing the land. By enlisting the support of local farmers, we're not just planting trees; we're fostering a sustainable revolution in agriculture.

Red Sandalwood, Jackfruit, Neem Tree, and other native species are taking root, improving soil health and transforming farms into thriving ecosystems.
These trees serve as more than just green guardians; they provide sanctuary for birds, acting as natural pest control and enhancing biodiversity.
Implementation plan
Our local planting partner — the Isha Foundation — is carrying out an implementation plan rooted in community engagement and grassroots empowerment. Collaborating closely with local farmers, we're mobilizing a network of stewards dedicated to reforesting the Cauvery River basin.

From tree planting workshops to hands-on support, we're equipping farmers with the tools and knowledge needed to nurture these newly planted trees. By harnessing the collective effort of individuals committed to the land, we're building a ripple effect of positive change, one sapling at a time.
Team
Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation is the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees. Together with our partners, we have helped plant more than 500 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities, and forests throughout the world. Our vision is to lead toward a world where trees are used to solve issues critical to survival.
By joining forces with Humance, we’re amplifying our impact and empowering individuals to make a difference in their communities. Together, we’re continuing to carry out our mission to inspire people across the globe to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.
